KMC Carrier

2017-18

Kangaroo Mother Care, KMC for short, is a technique being utilized to help ease medical issues in premature infants.  By maintaining skin to skin contact between the mother and child, the infant's breathing, temperature, and heartbeat are regulated, allowing them to grow easier.  In order to properly execute KMC, the mother needs to have near constant contact with the infant, along with exclusively breastfeeding the child. This carrier allows these newborns to rest upon the mother's chest while keeping them nice and swaddled in the cotton knit lining.  The woven fabric over the front of the carrier allows the lining to hug the infant, without allowing it to stretch too much.  The back of the carrier is also a knit fabric which allows the carrier to adjust to the mother accordingly depending on her size.  This project is done in conjunction with Little Angels of Honduras and two other projects also done at RIT to create a group called RIT Hope for Honduras.  Hope for Honduras had a booth at NYCxDESIGN, at Wanted Design in Brooklyn in 2018, in which all 3 projects were shown.  A crowd-fund is open for furthering the project and next steps found here.
